Tech Survey: 19 Nov 2012

Greetings everyone! Two glorious weeks of annual leave are upon me again, and apart from the usual stuff that needs done around the house & the copious amounts of gaming I hope to get done during this pre-festive period, I DO have a lot of content I want to get up here on Tech Leopard and on my other blogs. For now, I’m including a little fun in the form of a tech survey which has been floating around & winged itself my way. If the mood strikes, please feel free to comment with your own answers or blog it yourself.

1. What is your favorite Apple product?
MacBook Pro! As pretty as the iMac is, and dinky as the Mac Mini is, I’m still a laptop girl at heart and nobody makes them as gorgeous as Apple.

2. Which version of Mac OS X did/do you enjoy using the most?
I’m outta the loop a little since my main Mac is still an old, late 2007, white MacBook. I started out on Leopard and upgraded to Snow Leopard – this model of MacBook won’t support Lion or Mountain Lion, though if it did I think I’d be seriously enjoying me some Mountain Lion goodness right now.

3. Do you prefer using a mouse or a trackpad?
Mouse!

4. 10-inch tablet or 7-inch tablet?
10’s nice, but 7’s that bit more portable and comfortable to hold in your hand for extended periods.

5. Do you think you could go an extended period of time (4-7 days) without two monitors?
Ooookay now don’t freak out, but I don’t have 2 monitors to use at home. *ducks* I’m still using a single 22″ monitor here hooked up to my gaming PC and my MacBook via a KVM switch. I get to use dual screens in my job now & feel like it’s spoiled me a bit, so hopefully I’ll be able to add a nice new monitor to my current setup someday soon!

6. What are your thoughts on iTunes 11?
Meh, nothing bad. It still does everything I need it to, but then again I’m not using it for anything complex or making use of a lot of the features they’ve added in the last few releases & updates.

7. If there was one thing you could change about YouTube what would it be?
Suits my needs as a viewer just dandy as it is! Possibly more ways of skipping in-built ads, but then that wouldn’t make YouTube or Google any money would it.

8. Which of your three consoles do you enjoy playing the most? (Wii, PS3, Xbox 360)
PS3 all the way. I love my Wii, but sometimes I don’t feel like playing a game where I have to aim at the screen or wave my arms around. My Xbox 360’s the original black Elite & sounds like an aircraft carrier – always been a bit turn-off! My PS3’s nice & quiet, streams my media from the server and has all the PSN, HD collections & exclusive games I could want so for me, it always wins out over the peer pressure of ‘must play 360 cos all my friends do’. If I wanna multiplayer, a part of me still prefers old school sitting in the same room, shared screen experience. Having said that, I’m NOT into FPS, COD, etc so definitely not part of the crowd that clings to those games and Xbox Live to survive.

9. Do you like the idea of installing multiple operating systems on a Mac?
I had WinXP installed on my MacBook, but found that I was using it less and less. I like the option of being able to install another OS and the freedom of choice it gives you versus being locked in with no say.

10. What is the next upgrade hope to do for your PC?
For the gaming PC, possibly a spare £40 for another 4GB DDR2 memory to max it out at 8GB. I definitely wanna stretch as much out of it as I can before ditching it for a brand new build. For the HTPC/Server, definitely at least a new 2TB hard drive to back up the contents of the existing media drive!

11. Desktop or notebook computers?
Desktops now that I have the space to sit at a desk properly, and because I enjoy upgrading and tinkering with the internals. For a long time, I didn’t have the space for a desk so laptops were the way to go. I still like laptops and will always have one even if it’s just a little netbook for some basic surfing and simple use, but they’re not as fun due to their lack of expandability.

12. How much hard drive space do you currently have in your computer?
Since I’m on my MacBook now, I’ll check… 320GB hard drive, 55.73GB available.

13. Will you be getting another Mac to replace your MacBook anytime soon?
If either Apple spontaneously lower the price of their systems OR if I come into money, then yes! Otherwise, I’ve got a snazzy little Arctic White Bitfenix Prodigy with Hackintosh written all over it! At this point I could build a roaring little i5 IvyBridge system for around £400-£450 if I shop selectively so Apple aren’t drawing me back with their pricing!

14. Excluding iOS, what is your favorite phone operating system?
Rather blindly going to have to say an Android OS since I’ve never used anything but iOS and haven’t been that impressed with Microsoft’s offering to the phone market.

15. Do you think touchscreen computers will be a standard in 7-10 years?
For many tasks yes, I think they’ll be pretty standard. For home computing, depending on what you’re doing I still think a good old mouse & keyboard will still have its place somewhere.

16. How much time do you spend on the computer on average?
Lol far too long! When I’m working that day, around 7hrs in work and 2 or 3hrs at home. A few hours a day usually when not out somewhere, playing a console or watching TV. Since I like to game on my PC too, it tends to eat up a few hours if I sit down to play something – ouch!

17. Which would you take on the go: a notebook computer or a tablet?
A tablet if I was just going to be needing leisure browsing, etc & if I had one! If needing to get any form of work done or be productive, my netbook.

18. Wired or wireless computer peripherals?
Sorry, never been a fan of messing about with batteries, charging docks and resyncing devices should they need to be paired again to work after cutting out mid-anything you’re doing! Wired all the way for me!

19. What is the next device you hope to get a hold of? (computer, phone, tablet, etc.)
A tablet, preferably a Kindle Fire HD or a Nexus 7. I enjoy iOS, but haven’t been impressed with what you get for your money from Apple when it comes to their tablets (well with anything lately, but mainly their tablets!) compared to others available on the market.

20. What kind of posts can we expect soon?
Erm, I’ve still got the Antec 1200 to Antec 300 case swap to publish as well as a few other bits & pieces. I did have a Hackintosh series drafted out, but since I’d put this on the backburner over the festive period, I didn’t want to be posting about something I wouldn’t be doing for quite a while so they’re in reserve with a few other things.

Well that’s, that done. If you want to take the survey yourself, feel free to repost elsewhere or leave your answers in the comments, I’d love to read them. 🙂

  1. I seriously considered Apple until their recent prices went up. In AUS$ it’s even more of a price hike than in the UK! Waiting to see how your hackintosh comes out girlie.

    • Yeah it put me off 2yrs ago when Apple dropped the base price of the MacBook in the US by $100 and increased it by £100 in the UK. They’ve continued to raise the price year on year with new models. Lol my hackintosh? That may be a long way off yet!
