Introducing The iPhone 5S

Yep, you’ve guessed it! Following my recent post introducing the iPhone 5C, I’m now going to give you a brief rundown of Apple’s latest high spec phone offering, the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 5S was announced at Apple’s media event on the 10th September where they also introduced it’s slightly lower spec, but undeniably more colourful sibling, the iPhone 5C. The iPhone 5S at a glance:

  • Addition of a tasteful, white/champagne gold to the existing colour schemes of Black/space grey and White/silver.
  • Powered by the latest A7 processor offering 64bit.
  • Available in 16GB, 32GB and even a whopping 64GB capacity.
  • Touch ID via the new Fingerprint Sensor.
  • 4″ Retina display.
  • Slow-mo video.
  • Dual LED flash.
  • Siri

The iPhone 5S looks identical to the iPhone 5 at first glance. The size and overall design remains the same, but many changes have taken place beneath the surface. The new A7 processor finally brings 64bit to the iPhone, allowing it to make the very best of iOS 7 right off the bat. Without a doubt one of the most interesting updates has been the inclusion of the new Touch ID. The new fingerprint sensor built into the home button will be able to read sub-epidermal layers from multiple angles, allowing it to read your fingerprint from various angles and partial touches. This feature can already be used to unlock your iPhone 5S or even use instead of typing in your iTunes password when authorising or buying apps.

Say cheese! Smile!
Several improvements have been made to the camera on the iPhone 5S. The rear camera has a new 5-element lens with an f/2.2 aperture, a sensor that’s 15% larger than the iPhone 5 and includes a dual-LED ‘true tone’ flash which is designed to adapt to existing lighting levels to allow for capture of truer skin tones. Other new camera features include the much sought after ‘Burst Mode’ which will capture 10 pictures a second allowing users to select the best one, and ‘Slo-Mo’ allowing the user to capture 720p video at 120 frames per second.

After having stuck with my current phone, the original iPhone 3G for so long, I will DEFINITELY be upgrading as soon as the iPhone 5S is released. I’m happy with the improvements and new features announced, and more than a little impressed by the fact that Apple have (at least in my opinion) managed to pull off a new Gold colour offering – I find the champagne gold and white actually quite tasteful. My current provider haven’t announced their tariff options yet, but as soon as they have, I’ll happily be taking the plunge!

What about the rest of you?
Anyone else getting themselves either an iPhone 5S or 5C or at least thinking about it? Feel free to let me know in the comments. 🙂
